My Honest Hungryroot Experience + Recipes You’ll Want to Try

Updated: 20 minutes ago

I get overwhelmed with constantly cooking, and grocery shopping stresses me out.  I love convenience, but that isn’t simple when you have celiac disease.  I first tried out Hungryroot after seeing other people post about it.  I was wondering if it would be safe for me.  The only way to try was to check it out myself.  I purchased it for several weeks and I really enjoyed it.  I should also note that after using it, Hungryroot reached out to me to create some videos for them in a paid partnership.  This article is not paid, but some of the food I received was provided to me by Hungryroot.  I will still pay for the service for myself.

How it works

Hungryroot is not just a meal delivery service, you can also order groceries as part of your order. You order on their website or their app.  You select your dietary needs and it will filter recipes based upon your needs.  It is not a dedicated gluten-free facility, so you should be very cautious with reading ingredients.  I choose the foods I want to try instead of having it select for me.  This allows me to read the ingredients and determine what is best for me.

Pros of Trying Hungryroot

Easy to order, and the food ships directly to your door.

Easy to prepare – the recipes are mostly quick preparation or heat and eat.  If you don’t like to cook, this is a wonderful option for you.  If you want to create, select the recipes that require more preparation and then add your own touches to them. I love that most of the proteins are heat and eat, and most of the meals are quick to assemble.  They even have some ready-prepared meals under the Hungryroot brand, as well as meals from Kevin’s and other brands.

Full-sized groceries – full bags or vegetables and salads, full-sized packages of brands that you know and trust. You can also order gluten-free groceries from the site including supplements, snacks, and other products you use.

Healthy options – They include tons of vegetables and healthy options.  They also have vegetarian options, and you can choose nutrition options based on calories, carb-conscious, high protein, less sodium, less sugar, and anti-inflammatory.

Options for all meals – you can even select breakfast options.  They also have the ability to select cuisine preferences and the appliances you have to make cooking easier. They have kid-friendly options too.

Serving Size – you can choose recipes for 1, 2 or 4 portions.  I usually choose 2 portions so I have leftovers or if I am hungry, I can eat more.

Cons:

Protein – For people who prioritize protein, some of the

proteins may be less than what you want.  I would add in additional proteins when placing my orders.  I love the salmon options, which have pre-cooked salmon.  That one piece of salmon was perfect for my meal, but the salad stated that it was a 2 person salad.  The vegetables may have been for 2, but the protein really wasn’t enough.

Variety – They have many options, but often they are based upon the same components.  You may want to vary proteins and options if you want tons of variety.  I found that alternating weeks for Hungryroot with other groceries or meals brought the variety I needed.

Flavors – They have a variety of flavors, but they may not be what you enjoy.  I love a variety of flavors, but you may not want the options offered.  They did have plenty of plain protein and vegetable options.  I love that the sauces were all prepared for me, and it was a fun way for me to experience different cuisines.

Gluten – This is not a dedicated gluten-free site, and they have gluten options.  They also may have technically labeled gluten-free options but may contain gluten.  I recommend staying away from anything with oats.  Suki alerted to an Abe’s Mother brand muffin sent after I forgot to update my order.  I don’t believe they carry that item any longer.  Another follower said they got sick from a vegan patty.  I believe that the vegan burger patty also had oats.

What I recommend: Here are the meals that I have purchased most recently.

The meals I have on rotation are:

Sweet Kale Salad with chicken or salmon.  That is a quick and easy lunch.  I have this multiple times per week. It is just heat and eat.

Juicy Chicken & Rosemary Potatoes – This is a heat and eat meal, and it is so delicious.

Tacos - I love any of the tacos, you get a whole package of tortillas for other recipes.

Pasta - They have fresh pasta options as well as packaged options like Banza brand. I love that they have the sauces that are already prepared and you can just add them. The pesto was delicious.

For easy, easy microwave meals, I enjoyed the Pad Thai and the Korean Burrito Bowl.

The Bison with the vegan tzatziki was one of my favorite meals. The chickpeas with the cucumber were such a nice protein-rich meal. I also served it over a bit of lettuce to add more vegetables.

Desserts – I love their cookie dough and brownie batter.  It is such a good treat, and I have never baked the desserts.  I eat it straight from the jar.  It is vegan so it is safe to eat.  They also have lots of fun sweet treats which I enjoyed trying.

All in all, when I have Hungrymeal in my refrigerator, I have quick and easy meals without thought. I also find I get more vegetables in my diet. I recommend trying it, especially for those weeks when you know life will be extra busy and challenging. It may also be a good option if you are traveling to visit family or friends and you want easy, safe food.
